How to Fix Windows Errors

MS Windows was made for the home PC user and therefore not much thought was paid to security issues. Because of the success of Windows and its tendency to be an easy target, it is often susceptible to malware.

If your Windows-based computer is generating many Windows errors, try these steps to repair your PC-system.

First, try to run System File Checker (SFC). This useful tool will scan the files on your system and restores corrupt or missing files with corrected versions. Running this tool could resolve your Windows errors. You have to be logged in as an administrator or have administrative rights to carry out this utility.

  1. Go to Start
  2. Choose Run
  3. Type: sfc /scannow (include the space between sfc and the slash)
  4. Click Enter

This will start the Windows File Protection tool. It will scan your computer to check if all protected files are undamaged and in their original versions. If the tool finds incorrect, corrupt or protected system files, it will automatically restore them with the right version.

If you run the System File Checker you may need the original installation discs. However, in most cases the tool will use correct versions from the on-disk cache.

Windows 2000 and Windows XP have a built-in repair system which fixes Windows errors without reinstalling Windows and lose your precious data.

  1. First, check your hard drive for errors to rule out any hardware issues.
  2. Double-click on My Computer.
  3. Right-click on the hard disk (generally the C: drive).
  4. Go to Properties.
  5. Choose the Tools tab.
  6. Go to the section Error Checking and click Check Now.
  7. Check both boxes and click Start.
  8. After error-checking your hard disk, turn off your computer
  9. Get your original Windows installation CD and put it into the CD-ROM drive.
  10. Power on your PC and boot up from the CD by pressing any key when prompted.
  11. The blue Windows Setup screen will give you three choices:
  12. To set up Windows now, press enter
    • To repair a Windows installation using the Recovery Console, press the R key
    • To quit setup without installing Windows, press F3
    • Instead of choosing the most obvious choice “the Recovery Console” – you choose the first option "set up Windows now". This option will automatically detect your existing Windows installation and offers you to repair it
  13. Hit F8 to accept the user agreement.
  14. Press R after Windows offers to fix the system.
  15. The Windows Installer will start the process of fixing your computer.
  16. Enter the CD Key if prompted.
  17. After the repair is finished, update Windows using Windows Update. The repair removes all of your earlier updates so this can take a lot of time but it is an important one! You might let it update overnight.
  18. You may need to reactivate Windows after carrying out this repair.

Other steps you can take include removing temporary files and cookies, defragging your hard disk, and scanning for viruses and spyware.
